Dynasty of Ironfounders – the homes that the Darbys built

Take the short walk from Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron up the hill to the beautiful Darby Houses, former homes to the Darby family.

Rosehill House, built in 1738, and Dale House, built in 1717, sit on the hillside overlooking Coalbrookdale. 

The Darby Houses are currently closed and will reopen from 25 July - 11 September, 10am-5pm.

The following facilities and rules apply at this attraction:

  • Guide dogs only

Wander around Rosehill House as if it’s 1850 and get a glimpse of an Industrialist’s life.

See family heirlooms in the very rooms that they were originally used.

Is there a cashpoint?

You can withdraw money from our free-to-use cash machine at Blists Hill Victorian Town or from the Co-op in Ironbridge town.

 

 

Can I bring my dog?

Assistance dogs are welcome to visit with you, other dogs are welcome at Blists Hill Victorian Town only.

We suggest a visit to the Darby Houses will take at about 1 hour.

Is there anything for kids to do?

There’s a great family trail around the Coalbrookdale site to follow, pick it up from reception on arrival.

Children must be accompanied by an adult whilst visiting.

Are the houses suitable for visitors with disabilities?

  • Darby Houses have limited access to wheelchair users
  • They are approached via a steep hill. If approaching from the Museum of Iron, it is suggested that you park in the small car park to the side of the Houses. Spaces are limited and available on a first come first served basis
  • Ramps give access to the first floors of both houses
  • Dales house is all on one level
  • There is an accessible toilet on site
  • Rosehill House is on two floors. No lift is currently available to upper floor
  • Paths between houses are mixed surface, including gravel
  • Guides are available to talk to guests about the contents of the houses
  • Ask at reception for the best route if you are using a wheelchair
